Every February, Toy Fair is coming to New York City. This exhibition shows all toy companies from around the world to show off their latest products and every toymaker Lego for Mattel to Hasbro there with previews of the year’s hottest new toy. As a dyed-the-wool “big boy” I jumped at the chance to check out Toy Fair first hand. Here’s what I saw.

Anyone with children in their lives know toys can be a big deal and Toy Fair proves that. Spread across the floor of the Javits Center in Manhattan, this show is four days filled with toy designers and sellers and potential buyers of all types of retailers, large, eye-catching displays, bright colors and sounds, and, of course, lots and lots of toys.

The floor is a feast for the eyes, stretching the equivalent of five city blocks with row after row of stalls filled with new products from all over the world … and that does not even count the number of larger companies like Hasbro makers of Transformers, My Little Pony and Star Wars toys whose display was off site.

Lego was to check in with a huge display of all their major building toy. In addition to their own brands, the Enfield-based company will construction toys based on Star Wars movies like The Amazing Spider-Man is released Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy , and a huge line up of figures, vehicles and playsets of the smash hit The Lego Movie .

I was also charmed by the Mixels, a new toy line buildable creatures in different colors theme strains (red guys for fire, blue for water, that sort of thing). They get their own series of shorts on Cartoon Network, and they were all a little weird and totally fun. I think I have enough room on my desk for a few of them? …

Hasbro had another very impressive showcase, with lots of fun toys for girls and boys come in 2014. This year will see many new toys from My Little Pony, the Equestria Girls, Mr. Potato Head, the Littlest Pet Shop and more. However, the major focus was to support toys soon-to-be blockbuster movies like Transformers : Age of Extinction , Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy . Each property will see a lot of toys, and there were some really nice items soon shelves for toys.

And the new film will be more than just cars … a series Dinobots also comes with all the new robots that transform into dinosaurs provided! The Marvel films’ toy lines will vary from game action gear, like Captain America’s shield and Spider-Man’s web-shooters that children can wear, as well as a wide variety of action figures and more. I was particularly impressed with a new toy called Mashers, that cartoon figurines of Marvel heroes and Transformers, each with interchangeable arms, legs and heads, allowing kids to create.
