This Ad For A Dallas Vintage Toy Shop Speaks To The Five&Year&Old In All Of Us – Co.Create

Original article

Co.Create[1]

The selfish five-year-old in all of us who hates to share, that is.

It’s about to be that time of year where the ads get so thick with nostalgia and sentimentality that turning on your TV for an hour is virtually a guarantee that you’re going to end up with tears streaming down your face. You turn on the game, and suddenly you’re listening to swelling strings and thinking about how your Nana died when you were 12, or how your little girl grew up too fast and your death is impending, so buy some friggin’ Christmas presents already.

Classic toy shop Dallas Vintage Toys has seen ‘em all, and their agency Dieste found a way to tweak that formula in a way that’s extremely satisfying. The “dad helps his young son build a costume” trope is done to death, and the first half of the commercial indulges that fully, hitting all of the notes we’re accustomed to—an acoustic guitar score, a dedicated boy sketching his dream costume, some father/son bonding over the project—before revealing the note-perfect twist that feeling like you’re five is way better than being five, as the dad unveils his high-end, ultra-realistic robot costume to his son.

Adults being mean to little kids never stops being funny, and it’s the perfect way to advertise a store that sells a sealed Return of the Jedi Imperial Shuttle for $ 800[2] or a 1986 Shazam! action figure from DC’s SuperPowers line for $ 450[3]. If you’re drawn to those things—and you’ve got the money to spend on ‘em—you’re probably the sort of person who dreams of a robot suit like the one in the ad, and Dallas Vintage Toys wants you to know that that’s okay.

Here’s what happened when IKEA let kids design their own toys – Fortune

Original article

IKEA has partnered with UNICEF to allow a few lucky kids to draw designs that were made into toys—for a good cause.

As you can see in the image above, the toys include an array of funky-looking animals, monsters and more.

“Over the last 12 years the Soft Toys for Education campaign has enabled IKEA Foundation to donate $ 90.4 million (67 million euro) – reaching more than 11 million children in 46 countries, through 99 projects,” according to IKEA’s website.

For every toy that’s sold on IKEA’s website, the foundation donates one euro to kid’s education projects around the world, Consumerist reported[1].

The toys cost[2] anywhere from about $ 4.99 to $ 14.99.

The company also released a YouTube video to go along with the campaign:

Chinese retailer in talks to buy British toy shop Hamleys – Reuters UK

Original article

HONG KONG/LONDON Britain’s Hamleys, where Queen Elizabeth bought toys for her children, is close to being bought by a Chinese retailer keen to get its hands on the world’s oldest toy shop. Hong Kong-listed footwear retailer C.banner International Holdings (1028.HK) said in a statement that it was in advanced talks to acquire the 255-year-old treasure trove of toys, games and candy canes. A source with direct knowledge of the transaction told Reuters earlier on Thursday that a 100 million pound deal was due to be announced shortly. The Chinese interest in Hamleys has come to light during President Xi Jinping’s pomp-laiden visit to London. British Prime Minister David Cameron is pitching the UK as the pre-eminent Western gateway for investment, hoping to seal deals worth $ 62 billion. Hamleys is best known for its landmark shop on London’s Regent Street. The seven-floor toy emporium is a tourist attraction in its own right, where children dodge sprays of bubbles as they race inside to watch cheery demonstrators fire plastic airplanes across the foyer. “If you’ve grown up in England, this is the big toy shop,” said Barry Young, 54, who brought his children for a treat after they recently moved back to Britain. Discussions between C.banner and France’s Ludendo Groupe, which has owned Hamleys since buying it in 2012 for a reported 60 million pounds, will be finalised in the near future, the Chinese company said. Hamleys declined to comment and Ludendo did not respond immediately to an emailed request for comment. BRAND PLANS C.banner, which describes itself as the second-largest retailer of middle-to-high-end women’s formal and leisure footwear in China, said it wanted to use Hamleys to diversify its business and leverage the well-known brand. To develop the brand further, C.banner said it was exploring options for a potential partnership with British department store House of Fraser, which is owned by China’s Sanpower Group. Hamleys’ very British offering includes the likes of Beefeater bears and toy London taxi cabs, though the business has been in foreign hands since 2003. It is by no means the only famous British retailer owned by overseas investors. Qatar Holdings owns Harrods, Hong Kong-based Dickson Concepts (0113.HK) owns Harvey Nichols and Royal tailor Gieves & Hawkes is part of Hong Kong-listed Trinity Ltd (0891.HK). Hamleys itself has broadened its horizons in recent years and plans to open a Moscow store in April to add to the 50-plus overseas outlets as far afield as Denmark, India and the United Arab Emirates among others. In Hamley’s dolls department, Liz, from Bristol in western England, was with her four-year-old daughter. She always pops in to the shop when she visits London with her children and said she hoped any new owners would keep Hamleys exactly as it is. ‘Racist’ kids toy set character sparks controversy – FOX31 Denver

Original article

DENVER — A popular toy brand is stocking shelves with a controversial toy that many are calling racist.

The Playmobil Pirate set looks like a typical children’s toy on the box, but what’s on the inside is causing all of the controversy.

One of the ship’s characters is dark-skinned with torn pants and the instruction guide shows how to put what looks like a shackle around its neck.

The Denver chapter of the NAACP does not approve of the toy.

“This is appalling and has no place here in 2015,” Brian Beecher, 3rd VP of NAACP Denver State Conference said. “That’s a slave. That is preposterous.”

They believe it’s sending the wrong message to children.

“Childhood toys should not subject children to terror and this is just what this is depicting,” Beecher said. “We should not and must not profit, or promote stereotypes at the expense of others. It’s about diversity and inclusion and respecting true history, not making fun or light of it and that is what this has done.”

The NAACP is calling for action.

“I really would like to see this recalled immediately and an apology put forth to the community because it has no place,” Beecher said.

The toy brand Playmobil said in a statement to the Washington Post:

“If you look at the box, you can see that the pirate figure is clearly a crew member on the pirate ship and not a captive. The figure was meant to represent a pirate who was a former slave in a historical context. It was not our intention to offend anyone in any way.”

Motorcyclists collect donated toys for local kids – KRDO

Original article

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Hundreds of motorcyclists in Colorado Springs are giving back to kids in their community.

After 27 years, the High Country Toy Run was canceled, but that’s not stopping motorcyclists from trying to make the holidays a little merrier.

“It’s time to do something good and give them something new that will put a smile on their face on Christmas morning,” said Toys for Tots coordinator Russ Miller. “We’ve been helping out thousands of kids every year, and we will do the same this year.”

High Country Toy Run organizers said they canceled the event this year because the city of Colorado Springs wouldn’t provide a police escort. The city classified the toy run as a special event, which requires a specific permit.

“It really bothered me a lot, that now it’s going to affect underprivileged children that weren’t going to get the toys that they would ordinarily get,” said motorcyclist William Mohr. “If you have, you should share, especially at Christmas.”

Despite not having an organized toy run, motorcyclists donated hundreds of toys to the Toys for Tots foundation Sunday.

“The people of Colorado Springs are incredible. They step up. We’ve seen that with the fires, with the floods. Everybody steps up and helps out their neighbor in this town,” Miller said.

Motorcyclists said they have high hopes for the charity event’s future.

“I hope that the people in the city back up and realize that this is a good thing, not a bad thing and do what they need to do to make sure this goes off better next year,” Mohr said.
